A Life Spent Bridging Nations and Technologies
Dr. Ko’s path to global leadership was shaped over four decades living and working in the United States. His distinguished career includes roles such as Commissioner of the Missouri Economic Development area, Board Member of the U.S. District Export Council, Chair Professor at Midwest University, a Board member of Regional Chamber of Commerce, Advisor to municipalities in Illinois, and board leadership roles in organizations including ADL Anti Defamation League, JCRC, and OCA.
Along the way, he founded, advised, or invested in numerous technology ventures—from blockchain and AI to big data and software—while also collaborating with major American venture capital firms like Capital Innovators.
He has appeared as a speaker or judge at internationally renowned gatherings including CES, SelectUSA, Money Show, DeepTech Showcase, and Venture Café, as well as major institutions such as KAIST and leading universities in Seoul.

“APEC was not just an event—it was a convergence of everything I’ve worked toward for more than 30 years. To discuss the future of global industry with world leaders, and to witness Korea stand confidently at the center of technological innovation, was profoundly meaningful.”

Q. 미국에서의 지난 40년간 대표님의 주요 업적을 소개해 주십시오.
저는 미국에서 공학을 전공한 후, 기술전문가로 경력을 쌓으면서 미국 기업에서 일하며, 산업 구조와 혁신의 본질을 배웠습니다. 이후 여러 기술 스타트업을 창업하고 매각하면서 얻은 경험이 제 인생의 전환점이 되었습니다. 이후 투자자로 전향해 30여 년 전 미국에서 유사코 그룹을 설립했고, 지금은 글로벌 투자사로 성장시켰습니다. 현재 저는 미 상무부 장관의 임명직인 U.S. District Export Council의 공식 위원이자, 미주리주 경제개발 커미셔너로서 지역과 국가 경제 발전에 기여하고 있습니다. 또한, 약 12년전 미국 내 비영리 단체인 ‘게이트웨이 한국 재단(Gateway Korea Foundation)’을 개인출자로 설립해 한국문화를 널리 알리고 있으며, 한국의 독도영유권 단체(DEWO)의 이사로도 활동 중입니다. 현재 미국 대학에서 겸임교수로 재직하며 젊은 세대에게 창업과 글로벌 비즈니스 경험을 나누는 일도 제게 큰 보람입니다. 무엇보다, 제 가족이 미국 사회의 생산적인 일원으로 성장해 가는 모습이 개인적으로 가장 큰 자부심입니다. 제 딸은 미국 대규모 병원에 현직 의사로, 아들은 미 해군 장교로 근무하고 있습니다.
Q. You have built a remarkable career in the United States. What shaped your journey?
“I started as an engineer, founded several tech startups, experienced both failure and success—and each step became part of my foundation.”Today, Dr. Ko leads USAKO Group while serving in official U.S. federal and state roles. He also founded the Gateway Korea Foundation, personally funding its work to promote Korean culture across America, and he continues to serve on the board of Korea’s territorial advocacy organization DEWO.
He adds: “One of my greatest joys is watching my daughter thrive as a physician at a major U.S. hospital, while my son serves as an officer in the U.S. Navy. That is the true meaning of legacy.”

USAKO Group began as a U.S.-based venture investment firm and has since evolved into a transnational innovation platform linking Korea and the United States. In recent years, the firm has accelerated Korean companies in AI, blockchain, deep tech, Cybersecurity and healthcare—helping them secure investment, partnerships, and market access in America.
“During APEC, we even finalized new investment agreements with Korean startups. Cross-border innovation is no longer an idea—it’s happening right now.”

제 철학은 간단합니다. ‘경험이 진짜 자산이다. 사람 중심의 글로벌 연결’입니다. 미국 주류사회에서 직접 창업하고, 실패도 겪고, 다시 일어선 경험이 저의 경영의 뿌리입니다. 한국과 미국의 문화, 비즈니스, 언어의 차이를 이해하고, 그 차이를 시너지로 전환하는 것이 저의 역할이라고 생각합니다. 또한, 함께 일하는 사람들을 ‘파트너’로 대하며, 단순히 거래 관계가 아닌 함께 성장하는 관계를 만들어가고 있습니다. 사회공헌과 멘토링도 경영의 중요한 축입니다. 10년 전 멘토링했던 스타트업이 지금은 저희 파트너 기업으로 성장해 함께 일하고 있다는 점이 제게 큰 자부심을 줍니다.

저는 미국에서 오래 활동했지만, 마음은 늘 한국에 있었습니다. 10년 이상을 대한민국 대통령의 임명직인 한국 평화통일자문위원으로 임명되어 활동했왔고, 비영리 단체인 게이트웨이 코리아 재단을 자비로 설립해 미국 내에서 한국문화를 알리는 데 힘써왔습니다. 특히 독도 관련 단체(DEWO)의 활동은 제게 개인적인 사명과도 같습니다. 젊은 시절, 미국의 한 대학 기숙사에서 친구들이 “한국은 중국의 일부 아니야?”라고 묻던 일이 있었어요. 그때 저는 충격을 받았습니다. 그 질문 하나가 제 삶의 방향을 바꿨습니다. 그날 이후, ‘한국은 독립된 주권국이며 위대한 역사와 문화를 가진 나라’라는 것을 알리겠다는 결심을 했습니다. 그리고 실제로 그 약속을 지켜왔습니다. 이제는 오히려 미국인 친구들이 한국의 기술력과 문화에 감탄하며 배우려는 시대가 되었죠. 그 변화를 직접 목격하고 있다는 사실이 참 감격스럽습니다. 이번 APEC 2025에서 한국이 세계 경제의 중심 무대에 서 있는 모습을 보며, 그때의 어린 약속이 현실로 이뤄졌음을 느꼈습니다.
Q. You often speak about your commitment to Korea. What does it mean to you?
Despite decades abroad, Han’s dedication to Korea has never wavered. He has served as a South Korean Presidential Advisor for Peaceful Unification, and continues to promote Korean culture through the Gateway Korea Foundation.
He recalls a defining memory:
“When I was a young student, someone asked me whether Korea was part of another Asian Country. That moment changed the course of my life. I promised myself I would make Korea known for its identity, culture, and sovereignty on global stage —and I’ve devoted my life to fulfilling that promise by founding Gateway Korea Foundation and serving Asian American economic and cultural nonprofit organizations.”
Witnessing Korea’s rise to global leadership at APEC was, for him, the culmination of a lifelong commitment.

“You are living in the best era Korea has ever known. Use the support systems around you—but don’t try to do everything alone.”
